Getting Started

WARNING - Mt. Ryokami is a difficult challenge with steep rock walls, saw-toothed ridges, and chain sections. It's considered one of the toughest climbs near Tokyo and is only recommended for experienced hikers looking for a real test of their skills.

Our starting point is the Ryokami Sanso. It's the closest trailhead from Tokyo with available parking. Public transportation options are not recommended due to the multiple transfers and infrequent schedule. It takes around 2.5 hours to drive from central Tokyo, so leave by 6AM so you can start hiking by 9AM. You could consider staying the night at Ryokami Sanso (mountain hut) if you are not a morning person.

The Trail

You can also check out my video tutorial available on YouTube.

This is a loop trail from Ryokami Sanso (両神山荘 / 日向大谷) to Nishidake (西岳) and back. The path from Nishidake to the summit of Mt. Ryokami is the most challenging and interesting, but the trailhead is difficult to access and closed during winter/spring. To make it more accessible, we take the Hinata-Ohya trail to the summit of Mt. Ryokami and then head over to the challenging ridgewalk trail to Nishidake. Due to the repeated ascents and descents of ridge walking, the elevation difference is nearly 2000m.

8:30 Start the hike from Ryokami Sanso and aim for Kiyotaki Hut (清滝小屋).

Take pleasure in a two-hour stroll through the forest.

10:15 You'll encounter a spot where you can refill your water bottle.

Hike for 10 more minutes and you will see the Kiyotaki Hut, which, although it has a washroom, emits a strong odor. Although the hut is no longer in use, a camping site is available, allowing you to spend the night if you're camping.

11:00 Ryokami Shrine

12:00 Ryokami Summit! On a clear day, the stunning views from Ryokami summit will allow you to see Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, the Central Alps, and the Northern Alps.

The route to Nishidake is a challenge with steep rock walls, saw-toothed ridges, and chain sections.

13:30 Nishidake (our destination).

The return journey to our starting point takes around 3.5 hours. It's important to be aware of the sunset time so that you don't find yourself hurrying back in the dark.

My Recommendation

During peak season, from May to November and particularly on weekends, the chain section between Ryokami summit and Nishidake may become congested. In such cases, it may take twice as long to traverse this portion, so it's important to allocate additional time for these sections.

After the hike, you can head over to 梵の湯 in Chichibu for onsen, sauna and dinner.

Their curry udon was incredibly tasty.
