Getting Started

Mount Mitake is located in the western part of Tokyo, Japan, nestled in the mountainous region.

First, head to Mitake Station by boarding the Chuo-Line from Tokyo or Shinjuku Station and reach Mitake Station by making a single transfer at Ome Station.

From Mitake Station, take a local bus to Takimoto Station or you can also choose to walk for 45 minutes.

From Takimoto Station, take a cable car to Mitakesan Station, which costs 1130 yen for a round trip (info on cable car: https://www.mitaketozan.co.jp/eng2014/index.html).

There is an option to take a one-hour hike along a road that is occasionally used by cars, which may detract from the serene atmosphere, so I don't recommend it.

The Trail

First, you should watch my YouTube tutorial.

The Rock Garden trail is a popular 3-hour loop from the top of ropeway (full hiking map).

The first stop on the way is Mitake Shrine, which can be conveniently reached by walking through a shopping street bustling with souvenir shops and restaurants.

Mitake Shrine

At the base of the shrine, there is a sign pointing to Rock Garden.

You will notice an immediate change of scenery.

Visit Tengu Rock on your way and pay a visit to Mr. Tengu, the legendary creature believed to be the protector of Mount Mitake in Japanese folklore. Tengu is depicted as a human-like being with wings, a long nose, and supernatural powers.

As soon as you pass Tengu Rock, you will find yourself walking alongside a stream, which marks the start of the Rock Garden.

There is a resting area with washroom and picnic tables.

Continue your journey to Ayahiro Waterfall which is used as part of the purification ceremony at Mitake Shrine.

There are also a few view points.

Another symbol of Mount Mitake is the Tengu's Cedar Chair.

From here, it's a short stroll back to the shrine.

Why not stop by their restaurants and souvenir section for some food and souvenirs on your way back?

My Recommendation

I always stop by Kabe Station for a day spa session at Kabe Onsen Ume no Yu Hot Spring, which offers a rooftop day spa, sauna, and a wide range of food choices.
