Getting Started
Makinoto Pass serves as a main trailhead along the picturesque Yamanami Highway, which forms part of the captivating Trans Kyushu Route stretching from Beppu to Aso. Here, you'll discover a spacious parking lot, a public washroom, and a delightful shop that serves delicious soft serves. For convenient access to various destinations in Kyushu, I highly recommend considering car rental.
While it is highly NOT recommended, you could take the bus between Kumamoto and Beppu and get off at Makinoto Toge stop.

8:30 The first check point is called Mt. Kutsuake, located just 30 minutes from the trailhead.
The trail for the most part are well-maintained, and while there are some rocky sections along the way, they are not overly challenging as long as you have suitable hiking shoes.

10:30 Summit of Mt. Kuju.
From here, we head back to the main trail, passing by a small lake, Miike Pond.
12:00 Nakadake summit, the highest point of Kuju Mountains.
The way back takes around 3 hours and you should be able to return to Makinoto Pass by 15:00.
My Recommendation
I recommend staying at the renowned Kurokawa Onsen, a historic hot spring town located nearby, to relax your body and mind after a full day of hiking.
The best season to visit is May and June to admire the blooming azalea beds. Another popular time to visit is from late October to mid-November, when the mountains are adorned with vibrant autumn foliage.
