How to Get to Kamikochi: A Comparison of the 3 Best Ways

Apr 5, 2023

To maintain traffic safety and protect the natural environment, the entry of private cars is prohibited. Here are the three primary options for entering the area.

1) From Matsumoto Station

There are shuttle buses that run regularly from Matsumoto Station to Kamikochi. You can find the timetable here, and tickets can be purchased at Matsumoto Station (bus terminal).

If you are leaving from Tokyo, take the JR train to Matsumoto first. The entire trip to Kamikochi costs approximately 9,000 yen each way and takes about 5 hours.

2) From Akandana or Sawando Parking Lot

To access Kamikochi by car, park at either Akandana Parking (in Gifu) or Sawando Parking (in Matsumoto). From there, you can take the shuttle bus or taxi. Parking costs 700 yen per day.

Taxis are cheaper and more convenient for groups of 4 or more, and especially if you have lots of stuff. To take the taxi, simply talk to the parking guy (he/she will call the taxi company).

3) From Tokyo via Direct Bus

Alpico offers affordable bus services from Shinjuku Station to Kamikochi for as low as 6500 yen per way. It is recommended to reserve your seat in advance. If you are comfortable with spending 5 hours or more on a bus, including overnight options, this is likely the most cost-effective choice for you.
